In Međimurje, the beginnings of organized water supply in Međimurje are related to the period of the beginning of the sixties of the 20th century. The water supply in Čakovec was ceremonially put into operation on November 25, 1962. year, and was built as part of the company “Vodovod, company for city water supply and sewerage – Čakovec”. We consider that date to be the official start of organized water supply in Međimurje.
From the point of view of water supply in a general sense, and based on the relief of the terrain, geological structure and morphological characteristics, Međimurje can be divided into two zones. The first zone is the hilly, upper Međimurje built mainly from Tertiary deposits, and the second zone is the flat lower Međimurje built from Quaternary deposits. Gornje Međimurje has very few water reservoirs. Due to potable and poorly developed porosity, the sources are mainly seepage type and have a very low yield. Lower Međimurje, on the other hand, is characterized by rich deposits of underground water. The aquifer is mainly located at depths of 3.0 meters and consists mainly of sandy gravel. The thickness of this aquifer is from 30 to 150 m, which means that there are large supplies of drinking water in the area of lower Međimurje.
